Leopard Compatibility

What's all this, then?

What is Leopard?

Leopard is Apple's pet name for the current, recently released (October 29 2007) version of Mac OS X, the operating system running on Macs. The version number is 10.5. Leopard supersedes Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4), released in late April 2005.

For more in-depth information about Leopard itself, read about Mac OS X on Apple's website. The rest of this page deals with the Leopard compatibility of Waffle Software's products.

Which Waffle Software products are compatible with Leopard?

ThisService 2.0.1 is fully compatible with Leopard.

Hex Color Picker 1.4 is fully compatible with Leopard.

Monocle is fully compatible with Leopard since 1.5.

Google+Growl is fully compatible with Leopard.

Gmail+Growl 2.0, Google+Growl's predecessor that's still available, is not fully compatible with Leopard. When customizing the contents of a Gmail+Growl notification, dragging a placeholder to any of the two text fields that accept it will instead copy the text and not the placeholder. To avoid this, type < and an autocomplete list should come up with the placeholders in a slightly less legible form. (These are the markers that the placeholder bubbles mask away.) It hasn't yet been determined whether the issue is a bug in our code or if the underlying implementation of the "token fields", which have been undergoing a rewrite by Apple, have changed in an incompatible way.

Now that Leopard is out, will your products start requiring it?

Even though Leopard sold over 5 million copies during the first 90 days (the total Mac OS X user base is estimated by Apple to be more than 26 million users), not everyone has Leopard, not everyone wants to upgrade to Leopard for various reasons and not everyone who wants to upgrade has the time, money, knowledge or applicable hardware to do so.

That said, Leopard is a worthwhile upgrade for almost any Mac user, and Leopard makes developing robust applications much easier. I will certainly want to make use of Leopard-only features in future versions of my applications, and the next major versions (not minor upgrades) will require Leopard.

Due to technical issues, the available Google+Growl beta requires Leopard, but this is intended to be rectified before the final release.
